The Dark is Rising sequence is one of my favourite series of books. I first read them when I was about 14, and have re-read them many times since - and I'm going to be 39 next birthday.

Yes, Over Sea Under Stone is one of the "tamer" volumes, as it does come across as a general children's adventure story, but I found it does an excellent job of setting up the Arthurian elements which she expands on in the later volumes.

I remember being so thrilled that they were making a film of the first book - and then being absolutely disgusted that they've based it in modern day America!!!!!! Since when did Herne the Hunter cross the Atlantic?! And to make one of his brothers the villain?!?! Not good - I'll stick to the books, thanks.

The five books in the series are:
Over Sea, Under Stone
The Dark is Rising
Greenwitch
The Grey King
Silver on the Tree

your english is fine.

I loved all of the books, even though the first book doesnt have much magic or anything. I especially liked the second one, how will had to find all those things and the dark riders and stuff. It was really well written. my memorys a little hazy on the details though, i havent read it in ages.

They are a fabulous set of books.

I was very disappointed to see that in the recent film they've made the family American (purely to help sell the film over there, I think!)

If you like these books, you should also try reading some stuff by Alan Garner and Philip Pullman

It's a great series.

The first one, _Over Sea, Under Stone_, isn't as good as the others in my opinion - it has a lot less of the mysterious and magical atmosphere, and is more of a straight children's book.

The others, though, get progressively better - and can be quite dark too, especially when the Arthurian elements come in. They're great for teenagers and adults as well.

I loved them as a child, and still have my battered copies on my bookshelf! Not impressed with the film version of 'The Dark Is Rising' I haven't seen it but didn't like what I heard about it.

And your English is very good!

I liked them although I had problems with the lack of bows and arrows and spears and shields in the first book. Apparently others did too, because she corrected that in the second.
