Anyone know how to tell if my mouse infestation is a big one or just a few mice? I have a dirt floor crawl space for a basement. It's an old house. We've caught two mice so far with the older "traditional" mousetraps. Also, can anyone recommend a good, non toxic (Have a cat) way to get rid of them. Keeping in mind they stay in areas where the cat cannot get. eg. basement entry way, drawers, basement, walls, etc..

Traps are your best bet to protect the cat. D-con is more effective but if the cat eats the dead mouse it could make it sick. Use glue traps if you don't like the "traditional" spring traps. Using traps is also the best way to assess how big your problem is. If you stop getting mice right away you know you got most of them. If your traps fill every day you are heavily infested.

Here is the best way I've heard of to get rid of many mice. My friend, upon my asking, told me it honestly works well:

Get a five gallon pail and fill it 1/2 with water. Cut 2 small notches in the top of the pail (a hack saw would work well... or steak knife) along the rim, directly on opposite sides one from the other. Pull a string (knotted on one end) across the top of the pail, using the notches as holders. Spin the string around the pail at least a couple of times, then tape it with duct tape to hold it secure. Upon this retrofitted "tight rope" you put peanut butter in the middle of the string (you may need some kind of holder that you add beforehand [tying it].) The string must be drawn tight; then when the mice go out to eat the peanut butter, they end up falling in the bucket and drowning.

A couple is not a big deal. If you see mice in the house, then you have a problem. I would keep trapping with peanut butter and a good quality Victor brand trap. You will eventually get them all.

Keep in mind that they can have babies pretty fast.

Multiply the number you see in one day by 10.
Use regular traps with peanut butter as bait. Change the bait daily.
Set the traps in tight places so the mice can't jump away when it goes off.

We had mice....and it was awful. We had people tell us, if you can count at least 10....there will be about 100. They multiply quickly.
Also, if there are alot of little tiny black droppings all over the place. You have alot.

Besty bet is to just set up traps all over the house and check them regularly. I used peanut butter to lure them.

Two is enough to tell you that you have at least several dozen. You have no way of knowing that you see the same two each time, and it's doubtful that you do.
