Currently, the sun is estimated to be about 4.6 billion years old. At its core, the sun is converting hydrogen into helium at the rate of 300 million tons per second. At this rate, it can continue doing so for another 5.5 to 6.0 billion years. After the sun has exhausted its supply of hydrogen, it will experience what is called the "helium flash", at which point it will rapidly expand into its red giant stage, where it will move towards the upper right on the hertzsprung-russell diagram (look up H-R diagram on wikipedia if you're curious). It is estimated that at this stage the sun's diameter will increase so much that it will completely envelop the orbits of the inner planets, including our own!

The life of our sun is estimated to be ten billion years, we have another five billion years to go before the sun begins to expand into a red giant, the Earth will be within the sphere of the sun. When the sun begins to shrink into becoming a white dwarf, the Earth will be left behind as a burned out cinder.

It's estimated to be about 6 billion years, which would give us about 2 billion more. If the sun becomes a red giant, life on earth will end, and the seas will evaporate. We will all be long gone before the sun reaches a dwarf state.

Nothing lasts forever we are planning to go to other planets to keep on surviving if the sun will become the red giant and then becomes a dwarf star. This will happen billion years from now.

From 'birth' to Red Giant = 10 billion years
then life as a white dwarf could last almost as long.
