the answers so far have been quite silly, apart from the one noting that there are a lot of items smaller than electrons.

the truth is that the smallest thing in existence, ...depends on your definition of existence. In String Theory, for example, the smallest possible element is a string. in Quantum Loop Gravity, the smallest element is the connection between any two "nodes" in "space". an "electron" as noted is quite a large thing when compared to the fundamental elements of reality.

However, these are just theories. In reality, every "smallest" thing ever found has eventually been found to be composed of yet-smaller things. The answer may be that there is no smallest thing. The answer may depend on our level of understanding of how reality works.

The viruses are the smallest living things on earth. They can be 18 nanometers, and one nanometer is a billionth of a meter!

why are people saying electrons? There are subatomic particles which are thousands of times smaller than an electron. Electrons are actually fairly large on a sub atomic scale.

Electron (anti-)neutrinos.

And if anyone wants to argue, they have a mass of about 0.5eV, the up quark has a mass about 1 million times larger, about 1-4MeV.

it wouldn't be molecules. it would be atoms. which can be broken into smaller compostite particles (protons, neutrons, electrons). then those can be further broken down into quarks.

either that or the patience of a child on christmas eve.
