Yes the sand can cause impaction's,but if you keep calcium powder available in the tank, they don't go looking for it,and eat the sand. As in the wild,Leopard Geckos eat sand in order to get calcium. But if you worrie about impactions with sand, use newspaper of reptile carpet.
With my Leopard geckos I had a warm end hiding box,a cold in hiding box,a under tank heater, small water bowl, shallow meal worm dish (keeped extra calcium powder in it to) and I keeped mine on the T-Rex Calcium Sand

20 gallon tank with a secure screen lid

If it's a baby, moss or carpet for the bottom; if it's an adult, sand is fine

At least 2 hiding places, one for either end of the tank

Either an undertank heating pad, or a low-watt night bulb (purple bulb) 50 Watts or less

Water dish

Food dish

Food - crickets, mealworms, waxworms, silkworms

A solid bottomed hide with moss and a spray bottle for a shedding hut

Vitamin supplement with calcium and vitamin d3

Sand is not a safe choice for geckos--impactions are very common.

No light bulbs are needed--they digest through belly heat, not radiant heat. Just use an under tank heat pad at one end of the tank.
