An air filter is used to remove particulates from the air. From hospitals to automobiles, clean air is preferred, in some cases required. A new filter removes particles quicker and more completely than a dirty one and allows for a greater flow of air. In an automobile, a dirty air filter will decrease miles per gallon. In the home and other locations where clean air is required, filters are changed regularly to insure clean, filtered air.

A good service interval on the engine air filter is two years. The engine will suck in millions of cubit feet or air in this time and the air is filtered through this round or square shaped air filter. You will lose power as the filter slowly fills up with dust and dirt and bugs and eventually it can get so clogged that the engine will not produce enough power to run highway speeds or it will just be sluggish in general. A new filter lets a higher volume of air into the throttle body and engine for maximum efficiency/correct fuel/air mix.

If you are talking about the cabin air filter, a good service interval is two to five years. When you run the heater or air-conditioning the air is drawn in from outside and passes through the cabin air filter before it blows through the vents inside the car. When this filter becomes clogged with dust and dirt you may feel like the heater is not putting out as much heat or the A/C may not feel as cold.

Good Luck!
