life in the trenches is very difficult both mentally and physically ,today over the sporadic enemy gunfire and shell blasts i saw scores of men lieing on the ground staring lifeless into the sky there limbs and various other body parts lay like a red garland all around them.some of these poor wretches had been trampled under foot where they fell and are half poking out of the ground like some macarbe madmans garden
later today we will get the order to go over the top amid a hail of gunfire,i cannot help but think if i will be joining my dead comrades or if god willing i will make it through the day.
my thoughts now go out to my wife and my children ,will i see them again,i hope very much so that i will,i dont know how they will survive without me
thats it times up we are getting the call to go over the top,the shrill blast of the whistles in my ears, the heavy bombardment as started ,this is it,this is it,chaaaaaaaarge.

I agree with "Do your own homework".
( English first?)

Use your imagination to create a story of what might have happened to a soldier in the the first world war.

Do you have enough information to give your imagination something to work on?
Why not have a look at a few actual diaries and accounts, to see what did happen, and get some ideas? (URL1)

A trooper who was there when the mine at Messines ridge was exploded, perhaps? (URL2)

Or the experience of being forced back in retreat? (URL3)

Cut-and-paste would be a give-away, but there's plenty there to spark your own ideas.

Sitting in the trench waiting for the whistle to cross no mans land, i write a letter to my family saying im thinking of them and will be home soon. I finish my letter and pin it to the trench wall with my bayonette. Its going to be no use to me anyway. The whiste blows and i hear shouts from the officers to get moving. All i can hear is the rattle of the German machine gun. I get over the top and start to run, my comrades and friends are falling all around me, i keep running. I dont know why, what am i going to do if i get to the German trench. Suddenly everything stops, the noise stops and i feel at peace. Then it goes dark

Hi, my name is Paul. I received today a notice to join the army. I do not fancy going, because my crystal ball tells me that war will be over in a few years with all parts swearing to God it will be "the last of the last" of all wars. Nevertheless, 20 years later we will have second wold war. With such nice results, innit? I mean if everyone was like me there would be no war whatsoever.
So to sum it up, if you don't like my reply just come over and shoot me at home, that should save everyone travel, time and expense. Thank you.
