When a neighborhood is prodominantly made up of an ethinic group, the neighborhood takes on the nick-name indicating the fact:

Little Italy,
Little Odessa,
China town,

But why is it that, black neighborhoods never are called "Little Africa"?

Is local politics so corrupt that they can't allow blacks to name their community after their ethinic identity (as so many other ethnic groups have done)?

Also, given the crime & violence of so many black neighborhoods, why are they never called "Little Samolia" or something like that?

Thank you.

well, most african americans are not immigrants in the usual sense. it is usually immigrant communities that get named like that.

in washington DC there is "little ethiopia" actually so it does happen with african immigrants.

Neighborhoods named after a geographic area usually have several things in common. The inhabitants are of the same ethnic background, culture, and moved to their current location from somewhere else for a common reason. Most importantly they continue to maintain strong ties to the place they once called "Home" where relatives still reside. Although African-Americans did originate from Africa the system that brought them to this country purposely severed those ties to "Home".

The examples you cite relate to areas where people originated from another country. It is also common to see neighborhoods where the residents are from another part of the US. In the 1940's & 50's blacks fled segregation in Louisiana to other states. In the city of Los Angeles there was a section known as "Little New Orleans". Tradition and ties to family remained very strong even to this day though the Little New Orleans community has become more diverse. Similar communities existed in other cities where today Katrina victims have sought refuge.

The neighborhood name you hear or read on a map isn't necessarily the neighborhood name the residents call it.

Why, this is really a dumb question/comment. Black crime reporter thanks for your enlightening comment, you're really well versed and educated. If I was criminal I might be upset but that was really stereotypical.
