The answer to your question "why do they pretend to be unbiased?" is very simple. Their charter requires that they be unbiased.

However, those who make the programmes, and especially, but not only the journalists working on current affairs progs. are highly political and motivated to present the news reports according to their "spin". Thus the programme makers who have a large amount of freedom, present a BBC that deviates from its Charter intentions.

It is no surprise that a head of department will promote and appoint staff who reflect his/her views and atitudes, so the team of left wing trendies grows larger over time.

If the BBC does not find favour with the government of the day, they may find themselves short of cash, since Parliament is not going to vote them increases in licence fee if they offend too many of the governing party's MP's.

The BBC is the house organ of English imperialism on the island of Great Britain and of the English elite within England itself. It is conservative by definition and in practice.

Like most such organizations, it finds it useful when "critics" characterize it as the opposite of what it is.

What did you expect them to say; "We're bought and sold by the government"? Send them over to the U.S. ; We have Ch 5 and Bill O'Reilley. A knee-jerk reactionary who has to be seen to be believed. After watching him, one starts to wonder if freedom of speech hasn't gone to far. And of course, he claims to be unbiased, when the whole Channel is a Republican propaganda mill.

Spot on Rachel. There is no pretence about it though, its quite open to me. The top echelon are the 70s Marxists and have continued to recruit people with their own philosophy. They have always been 'left wing' and I cannot see it changing soon. Watch London Tonight for real anti-Police venom for a start.
