old, what kinda question is this I just dont understand how anyone can even think there is any way to compare new to the old. You must be young and dont understand the greatness of the old stuff.

Old Metallica. It's not that new Metallica sucks, or that they sold out -- despite what their fans will say. The real reason is this: Metallica are an evolving band. They started out as a really technical hardcore punk rock band with some NWoBM influences. That hardcore punk rock became known as thrash metal, and it was further developed by Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, and Megadeth.
However, Metallica continues to change their style. Ride The Lighting is radically different than Kill 'Em All for example. And Ride the Lighting is very different from their self-titled album (A.K.A. the Black album). And their new album will be different from St. Anger. It's always changing, which makes Metallica so controversial.
My advice: Don't worry about it, set back, and let the music guide you. No one can answer this for you. If you like something, go for it, and go bulls first (sorry ladies!) In the end, half the people who say they dislike St. Anger will be the first people to tell you how much they loved it when Metallica makes another great album.

old. even though metallica hasnt changed their sound too much, the old is still the most original stuff.

Old was so much better just check out Master of Puppets, or Ride the Lightning, or Kill'em all! That was true metal. not some b.s. they try to pass on us!
