try apple. if there isnt one near you, you can always order from their website. no vista programs. or also, if you want a pc with xp, dell has those.

Not from the usual retailers. When I bought mine from PC World they told me all were now coming with Vista factory fitted - meaning you probably can't even get it uninstalled unless you buy a new laptop and then switch the hard drive. All sounds like too much hard work - go with Vista and most Win2k/XP software will install and work fine with it.

IBM ( now lenovo ) has some great deals on laptops, with options to select XP or Vista.

By default the laptops are priced assuming that you will choose Vista, so XP will actually get your price lower.

hi fiona
yes,any manufactuer will install windows xp on a laptop if you ask them when ordering
this is a more common request since the introduction of the vista operating system, and mainly due to 1)the hardware requirments of vista 2)users finding the os too difficult and 3)we just love windows xp
i think what people like about windows xp is it dosent require massive amounts of hardware(memory, cpu, graphics)but you can add more if you wish
windows xp will happily run with just 128mb of ram, however i run 1.5gb on mine and could still run more
just ask the manufactuer and they will install what you want, even linux
good luck fiona !

Vista isnt really that bad. you get used to it. i found it to be slightly better. found that some things that didnt work on XP worked on vista!

but www.overclockers.co.uk has one in the laptop - value 1 section but it's on preorder and looks pretty good!. windows XP PRO

or you could always try ebay.
