My parents were over for Thanksgiving and somehow our wood veneer flooring was scratched deeply to where a small piece of the floor is missing. How can you fix that?

If it is really deep, Get some wood filler from the hardware store. You can match colors pretty well. this is to bring it up to the proper level, basicaly just filling in the scratch. Then you use the old stand by that every good carpenter has in his tool box. Crayolas. You can match any color and you just color in your mostly filled scratch and polish. You will be amazed. This works on fine furniture finishes as well. Good luck!

there really isn't enough info to supply a good answer. is the scratch thru the finish? is it logitudal or latitudal to the direction of the floor? how old is the finish and is it stained? let's assume you are a lucky sort and the scratch is on the finish and only involves one or two boards. LIGHTLY sand only those boads until the scratch and the boards are cloudy. do not sand to bare wood. remove all the dust with a vacume or cloth dampened with paint thinner or water depending on finish type. next tape the floor surrounding the area on the joints of the wood and apply two coats of the proper polyurethane. ie gloss, semi, flat oil or water based. let dry and remove tape. it's pretty much the same process for a scratch thru the finish but much more work as you have to sand to the bare wood and apply more finish. if this is the case and if the floor is stained, consider getting an estimate from a local floor refinisher. with the proper tools and experience it really isn't a difficult fix and shouldn't cost a lot of money. i don't think you will be happy with the results of a stain pencil. they aren't made for that application. good luck!
