It can be.

In Christian tradition, the weeks leading up to christmas are NOT referred to as the Christmas season. Rather, they are called the season of Advent. It is to be a time of quiet prayerful waiting.

Historically, the church Christmas season begins on Christmas Eve and extends till January 6, Epiphany. The department stores tell us that the season begins the day after thanksgiving and ends on Christmas eve. ( The shopping season.)

So who determines the Christmas season? The church or the stores? I take great pleasure in sitting out the pre-christmas frenzy as best I can and then BEGINNING my celebration of Christmas when the materialistic indulgence is all over. (It's much nicer to listen to Christmas carols when they are not being used to sell something!)

When our daughter was little, we made a point of moderating her expectations as to presents, so she would not expect to get anything she asked for. Not just for christmas, but in life.
