Well, there's the O Henry story ,"The Gift of the Magi" , about the poor couple. The wife sells her precious long hair to a wigmaker in order to get money to buy a gold chain for her husband's prized possesion, a watch he inherited from his father. The husband, not knowing this, sells the watch to buy his wife an expensive comb for her hair.
As the narrator says at the end, they exchanged the most precious gift of all that Christmas, the gift of love. In being willing to make a sacrifice for the the other, they each displayed the wisdom of the magi.

"Famous" gifts?
O Henry's book "The Gift of the Magi" has a hair comb and a watch bob as gifts.
In the Walton's tv movie, John Boy's father gives him a set of yellow tablets and a pencil so he could write.
In the Wizard of Oz, the "Wizard" gives the Lion a medal for courage, the Scarecrow a diploma for knowledge, and the Tin Man a heart watch for a heart. Dorothy gets a trip home to Kansas.
