They talk to kids about it because they know a lot of stuff, but not the right stuff.

Kids know to use a condom, blah blah blah, but they don't know it can break. They don't know how hard it is to be a parent, let alone a teen parent.

Have you seen some of the questions in this section? I've seen questions where it's obvious teens don't know anything about this. That's why their parents need to talk to them, so they don't believe all the made up stuff. Did you hear that if you line your vagina with pizza sauce you can't get pregnant? Yeah, that was actually a question on here. Parents need to tell their children that things like that don't work, so they don't end up believing them, and trying htem, and end up becoming a teen parent.

It's embarrassing, it's silly, but it's also important. You may have been fortunate enough to get all of the good information elsewhere, but take a look at some of the questions that pop up around here - there are many, many, many people who have to find out the hard way that things like the withdrawal method just don't work. Many diseases and many more unwanted pregnancies could be easily avoided if more parents talked to their kids instead of hoping someone else does it, or even worse, hoping that they'll just go with abstinence.

My parents never gave me the talk, and I learned about everything from school and friends. I'd rather have it that way though, than a long, incredibly awkward conversation. See, parents do that b/c they think that their kids will get the wrong opinion if they learn about it elsewhere. But that's not really true. What the kid does once he/she figure it all out all depends on what kind of kid he/she is.

Not all kids get the right information. Last night I was watching the Tyra show and when she asked the teenagers about STD's, one girl thought that HPV was like the chicken pox! Just because they get it from friends and tv, doesn't make it right. Believe me, it helps so much when the parents talk to their kids about that. It's going to be dumb and annoying when you or your future child ends up pregnant or with an std.

Unfortunately kids think they know everything....and rarely is that the case. So parents should talk to the kids just to make sure they have the real facts, not just the BS on the streets. Remember parents were young once so they know what goes on out there....listen to them.

I think its important to talk to your kids about that stuff because its important for them to know that you have an open relationship and that they can talk to you about anything. And half of the info they learn from TV and their friends is inaccurate. When my kids are old enough I will talk to them about. For now when they have questions I answer them openly. My best friend is a lesbian and she is married to her girlfriend, my ten year old asked me about being gay and I gave her an honest answer without including my opinions about it. I want my kids to know right from wrong and be open with me. If they have a problem I want them to come to me not just thier friends.

My parents told me about it but all my friends found out about it by themselves. We all make dirty jokes.
