The first semesters is basically the same programme in both, start school and talk to the guidance people. Remember, it is you that will be living you life.

If the reason your family wants you to go into Medicine over Dentistry is that being a doctor pays more then you may be able to convince them. I used to want to be an Orthodontist and I know they make more than most doctor specialties (other than surgeons). I used to work for an Orthodontist and he had his own boat and airplane. After taxes and paying his staff and fees, etc. he took home over 600,000 a year. The pay in that field is great. I think the average is from 500,000 to 1,000,000 and more a year and that is what you take home after paying expenses like office, staff, taxes, etc.
The only reason I chose to go to medical school which is where I am now, even though I accept I probably will make a lot less (unless I become a brain or neurosurgeon or something like that) especially if I chose to go into a family practice is for volunteer reasons (I can do more if I help the poor as a doctor than as a dentist). But that's my own personal reason. Being a MD can earn more respect because you can save lives rather than saving teeth as a DDS, but you shouldn't care what people that would judge you that way think of you anyway. Any profession that helps people is respectable.
Look up statistics about how much doctors in different spacialties earn and how much dentists in different specialties earn, especially an Orthodontist. You may be able to convince them.
Even if they don't agree and you have to work and pay your way through college, work your butt off to earn scholarships, and get loans you need to become whatever YOUR passion is. I never had any support emotionally (that sucked) or financially (which I'm fine with) in my dreams because my family thinks women shouldn't go to school and should just get married and make babies. I was constantly being put-down and ridiculed for wanting to be educated and sometimes they wouldn't even want to talk to me, we were always fighting about it, they would try to sabotage. Luckilly your situation is not that extreme but I know what it's like when they want you to be something you are not. I had to work full time while going to school full time and had no life because there was no time for anything but school and work, and I had to earn perfect grades for the schlarships and to get into medical school. And here I am a university graduate and in Medical school, and did it all on my own. Don't let anyone stand in the way of your dreams ever. You will need to work hard but you can do it and it will all be worth it in the end.

Go with your instincts because you are going to be the one that will have to do this for the rest of your life, not your family. If it is the field that you honestly think that you will excel in and get the most enjoyment out of, don't be afraid to tell your family as much. You are at that point in your life where you need to start taking control of your own destiny. Let your family know that you will appreciate their support but you want to do what makes you happy. They should be able to respect that.

Do what makes YOU happy. They are not the ones living YOUR life, you are and if you're doing something that you don't think you like....then why do it?
I mean, don't tell them that, but tell them it's what you think will be best for you. You have to decide.

the problem is if your family is paying they sort of have control. you can plead and stuff but if they threaten to take away the money, you have to choose to put yourself through dentist school or take their money and go to med school. it's best if you can convince them to keep supporting you for dentist school. try hard.

Do what you want to do. It is your life and career don't go into something you will not be happy with. Your family should understand your decision. Go with your heart not theirs.
