When Odysseus visits the Underworld, the shade of the prophet Teiresias tells him that, after he reaches home, he will have to make a second journey, this one inland. He must carry an oar inland until he reaches a place where no one has seen one and asks him why he's carrying a winnowing fan. Then he will know that he's so far from the sea that no one knows Poseidon, either, and he should plant the oar in the ground as an offering to Poseidon, who will then be honored in a new place and be reconciled with Odysseus, who can finally go home to stay..
