I am interested in taking up quilting to make cat beds, lap blankets and bed quilts etc. I was wondering if there was any reason the Singer Prelude wouldn't work for these things since in my research I saw they have specific machines for quilting.

You can use any machine for quilting. The ones specified as "quilting" just have some extra features. I use a machine that I bought in the late 60s and it works just fine.

The hard part of doing the actual quilting stitches via machine, is dealing with all the fabric. I recommend your first project be something small. Get some experience before you go for a bed sized quilt.
