The plumber was just here replacing our hot water heater. He said it would take a few hours before we had hot water, but i turned on the faucet just to see. The cold water is fine, but when i turn on the hot water, it sputters and hisses and i can feel air coming out of the faucet. Is this normal? I am worried something didn't get reconnected right. I know I could just call and ask, but I don't want to make a big fuss if its not a big deal. Thanks for your help!

It's normal. Your water heater is a very large tank, currently filled with air. The pipes leading to and from your water heater are also filled with air. When the pipe was disconnected from the old heater, some water drained.

Running the water heater filled with air may actually be harmful.

Open the hot water valve on your sink. The sputtering sound you hear is the water trying to push the air through the pipes and out of whatever valve is open. Let the water run until it stops whistling, sputtering and/or hissing. The air is now purged from the system. The tank will heat more efficiently. Enjoy your hot shower/bath/whatever.

Yes, you should turn off the hot water heater. If you cannot find the switch for the heater then cut off all the power to the house until you fix the pipe.

Yes it is to be expected! You have to get all the air out of the hot water tank, and it usually goes through the pipes into the house. After you remove all the air (won't take long) you will get only good hot water!

this is very normal, but the plumber should have ran all the air out before turning it on.
right now turn on hot water and let it run until air and spuddering stops
then turn off water and wait 20 to 30 minutes and you will have hot water
it is not good to try and heat water without the tank full
if it is an electric one it will ruin it
run the air out it's that important
