okay, how bout...
crushing red cabbage to make universal indicator fluid, then testing the Ph of anything you can get ur hands on (bleach, small children etc.)
or
set fire to food and measure how much energy it contains (indicates calories)

This may be too trivial an example, but you can demonstrate an oil slick by filling a clear glass container about halfway with water, then adding an inch (or less) of salad oil. Then stir the whole thing. Although the surface of the water, below the oil, will be disturbed, the oil will remain smooth or nearly so. This experiment shows why it's so hard to remove an oil spill from the surface of a body of water.
