OPHIUCHUS has been known since ancient times. It's better known as Serpentarius, the Serpent Holder and is included in the list of 48 constellations described by Ptolemy. Ophiuchus is depicted as a man handling a serpent; his body dividing the large snake into two parts, giving way to the symbol used today as an Asclepius - the medical staff. As far as astrologers were concerned, the Sun traveled from the constellation 'Scorpius' and then proceeded directly into the sign of Sagittarius, but in reality this was not the case. The sun, for 19 days of the year, travels through the star constellation 'Ophiuchus' before entering Sagittarius from Scorpius. Ophiuchus, therefore, would have been the 9th sign of the zodiac - 30th November to 17th December (between the 8th Scorpio and 10th Sagittarius) had it been recognised by the astrologers. The site below contains a list of key words describing the attributes of those born under this sign.

According to the boundaries for the constellations adopted by the International Astronomical Union in 1921, there are 13 signs of the zodiac instead of the usual 12; time from Ophiuchus the snake handler is usually included in time given to Scorpius. If you already know your astrological sign from reading an astrology column in a newspaper or from consultation with an astrologer, you may be surprised that few of these dates correspond to the dates listed in the newspaper's astrological column. Why? Generally, listed astrological signs and the dates given by most astrologers assume that you were born around 140 AD.

Bear in mind Pluto was not discovered for another nine years. It took a little while to make up attributes and be accepted by astrologers. Changes in astrology occur only when there is an advantage.

A thirteenth constellation across the ecliptic, yes. But the zodiac signs aren't based on the constellations, so the zodiac remains the same.

(Even though people like to rub it in our noses to show us that "astrology doesn't work"... [lol] of course, things don't work when you don't know much about how it works. Why else do DVD recorders come with manuals?)

Besides, the constellations really can't have any influence anyway; they're stars which are not even remotely connected in which humans saw a pattern. So the only thing that constellations represent is the human ability to see things that aren't there.

So, you don't have to worry; Astrology hasn't changed a bit and there's no thirteenth zodiac sign :)

Yes Ophiuchus is a constellation just like the other zodiac signs, but the constellations are simply their to give them names so to speak. Astrologers have known about its existence for over 3000 years, but it does not play apart in the zodiac signs. In fact it's not a zodiac sign at all, if it was the signs would be split very unevenly with scorpio having only 9 days to itself. The signs instead are on the ecliptic line which heavily influences the seasons (in the northern hemisphere that is), like the spring and autumnal equinoxes and the summer and winter solstice and it splits the signs more evenly with this method.

the 13th zodiac is known as OPHIUCHUS.

Astrologers have not included Ophiuchus in the wheel of Astrological signs because the Sun spends only about nineteen days in this 13th sign of the Mazzaroth
