It's the biggest shopping day of the year... so the malls are MEGA crowded, making it a very sad day for everyone who goes to the mall trying to find parking, waiting in lines, etc. It's also a large indicator for our economy and retailer's and bank's pocketbooks... if Black Friday goes well, retailers and banks and credit card companies are making money, meaning thy will have a holiday season that's be profitable enough to put them back in the "black" accounting-wise and it means the economy is strong. If it goes poorly, the holiday season won't be very profitable and the economy is suffering.

Because that is the day when retailers hope to start the Christmas shopping season in the black. That comes from the fact that black ink represents profit, and red ink represents loss, in book keeping.

because that is the first day of the year that retail outlets go into the 'black' ie have covered the year's expenses and start to actually make a profit.
in accounting terms, red means debt, black means out of debt or the number is a positive.
businesses traditionally have 'gone black' on that day.
