I like unique names that come from old books but sound like they could still work today. (Some of them remind me a lot of really popular names -- for example, the popular name Aidan comes from the same Old English book that my first three boys' names do -- but these ones are not as overused.) Here are some of my favorites. Please tell me what you think:

Boys:
Caedmon -- the first English poet
Caelin (CAL-in) -- Anglo-Saxon name
Alban -- Anglo-Saxon name
Hadrian -- Roman emperor; built a wall in England
Ashley -- from Gone With the Wind
Lysander -- from Shakespeare
Troilus -- from Shakespeare and Chaucer
Gareth -- knight in Arthurian legends
Gawain (GOW-in) --knight in Middle English poem

Girls:
Una -- heroine in Spenser's Faerie Queen (means "one truth")
Moira -- Wendy's middle name in Peter Pan
Bonnie -- Scottish word for "pretty"
Isolde -- lady in Arthurian legends
Lily -- from famous poem by Goethe
Lucy -- used in many Wordsworth poems
Ophelia -- heroine from Hamlet

I like Hadrian, Caelin, Gareth, and Gawain. Lysander and Troilus are too well known--he might get teased for those names!
I like Una, love Moira, like Bonnie...Lily and Lucy are good...Ophelia kind of has bad connotations (I mean...she killed herself.)

I think that it would be wrong to name a boy anything from the first list of names except maybe Gareth. The others are too odd, likely to be mispronounced, or associated with girls.
Fewer problems with the girl names, except Una is odd/ugly, Isolde begs for mispronunciation, and Moira, Lily, Lucy, Ophelia are way overused already.

I don't dislike any of these, but my favorites would likely be Gareth (I also love Gethin) and Gawain for boys and Una (prefer Oonagh, visually), Moira, Isolde and Ophelia for girls. Lily and Lucy are sweet as well, but so much more common that the rest. Just not quite as intriguing, given the others listed. :)

I love Ophelia, but I'm guessing some people won't. But Lia could be a nice nickname until she is older.

Please don't use Ashley as a boy's name. As much as I hate it for a girl, it has been used so much that people will find it feminine. I'll throw out a few more:

Atticus
Iago
Heathcliff

For boys I like Hadrian ( really really like Hadrian ), and Gareth.

Girls: Lily. I like Ophelia..but also trying to think of a girl's life being named Ophelia and not sure how other kids would take it. I know you shouldn't think about that, but I'm sure it's hard for a child to grow up being made fun of, although like I said, I really like that name anyway. Lucy is cute too!

I love the names Caelin and Ashley, which we normally consider girl names, for boys! I read Gone With the Wind and ever since I loved the name Ashley! I also love Lucy, or Lucille, for a girl!!! I think it is classy!

Remember the child has to live with this among class mates ,friends, and a host of other people their whole life. We are in a down the road generation a couple hundred years.
