Lucius Vorenus...the hostages were out of Iran BEFORE reagan was sworn in and LONG BEFORE iran/contra which makes your claims of being a veteran very suspect, to say the least

Ollie North directly and knowingly violated the law by illegally funding money to the Contras. This money was received from an illegal arms sale to Iran, who was holding Americans hostage. Not only was it a crime but it was a violation of the Constitution. Violating the Constitution for whatever reason is surely treasonous. Reagan was in dereliction of his duty when he feigned ignorance.

You say Iran Contra like it's a bad thing. Lets re-cap what happened, the Nicaraguans overthrew their dictator Anastasio Samoza in 1979, primarily due to an embargo imposed by President Carter.
Then the New Nicaraguan regime began receiving shipments of the newest Soviet tanks and weaponry and the MIG-29 fighter, in the western hemisphere. This of course is unacceptable during the Cold war.
President Reagan had their harbor mined to prevent any further shipments from getting in. True to form, the Democrats stepped up to the plate on behalf of their Soviet allies and passed legislation blocking President Reagan. But there was still a lot of Soviet weaponry going to a new communist regime in central America which was still a threat to the US. So, the Contras kept the Sandinistas and their Soviet weaponry tied up and neutralized the threat to the region. Iran-Contra was a dandy idea and Colonel North is a hero.
One other note about the MIG-29, Nicaraguans couldn't fly that plane, so Cubans, Chinese or Russians were behind the stick. Is that acceptable to you?

You can disagree with what North did, but I don't see how that makes him a traitor. He was hardly acting as a rogue agent and the goals of the deal were PATRIOTIC. Unfortunately, as the saying goes, "When you lie down with dogs, you are bound to get some fleas" applies here. He was doing a dirty job FOR THE US GOVERNMENT and there are no pretty rules when dealing with the likes of the Contras AND trying to win the release of the American hostages.

I think history will have to judge whether North was right or wrong. I certainly won't...and whether he is ultimately considered to have been on the right side of the issue, he was (and still is) a patriot.

First you should thank him for preserving your right to ask a stupid question.

Whatever FOX News is doing must be taken seriously. They have more viewers than CNN, CNBC, MSNBC, HNN, C-Span, etc. combined.

Every answer here that accuses Ollie of a crime. Ollie North did not lie under oath to a federal grand jury. Do you libs now want crimes prosecuted or are you still Clinton hypocrites?

I was with 1st Recon Btn USMC 90-95 Is it OK if I answer the question?

If I can then all I would have to say is Lt. Col. Oliver North Did his duty. He tried to get the hostages out of Iran (unlike our worst president Jimmy Carter ) and help the Anti-Communist Contras.

Sorry Libs., but The Commies lost and we won because of sacrifices like men like Lt Col North.

How exactly does Iran-Contra make Ollie North a traitor. Do you have any understanding of that of which you speak or did you just overhear it in the coffeeshop? Iran and the Contras were both opposing Communist regimes our enemy at the time. How is supporting them treasonous?

If I was in a combat situation, I would rather have Ollie North with me, rather than a politician.
