But, whats so good about it, how does it make you feel good.
Both my parents smoke, and I can't stand it, nor do I understand why they do it...they always tell me NOT TO SMOKE, that ill be punished if they ever catch me....this is a bit hypocritical don't you think?

I hate how my parents smoke, usually one to two packs each day, each other, so they go thru 4 packs a day, every day of the year, for about 30 years each. We don't have much money anyways, so them smoking just makes it even worse.
And whenever they complain about not ever having money, I say, quit smoking and we'll have money to do fun stuff, and not just live life with the essentials....this is when I get yelled at and either hit, or sent to my room
it sucks.

Because it feels so damn good.
It feels good because it is a drug and when your addicted to a drug it feels really good to have it. Your parents tell you not to smoke because they know how bad it is and probably wish they'd never started, yes it's hypocritical but you know that they're only thinking of whats best for you.

You start because it makes you look cool (you think anyway), it's rebellious, antisocial, makes you look tough.
Then one day you wake up and the first thing you do is grab a cigarette, it becomes a part of you, if you can't get one you go crazy. All you want is that next smoke, you're addicted.
Now you can't stand it, you cough all the time. Your clothes, car and home stink,. You're treated like an outcast, all you want now is to quit but you can't.
Then one day you manage to quit, and after five years you have one, and it's the most disgusting thing you can imagine and you wonder why anyone would ever smoke.
At least that's how it was with me.

I started at 15 because my boyfriend did...he'd been smoking for 8 years (he started when he was older than me though) and I got fed up of standing out in the cold with him whenever he wanted a cigarette. I smelt of smoke anyway and kissing him tasted of cigarettes so it didn't matter if I did too so I took it up just to give me something to do when I was keeping him company. 6 months later I could no longer afford it (all my allowance was going on cigarettes) and I found it hard to get through a schoolday without a smoke so I quit.

I started when I was very young because I wanted to look older. Then I had to try and stop around 4 times before I finally did. I haven't smoked in at least 15 years. Smoking makes you feel calm at first but it makes you want another by making you nervous. Very insidious habit.

A person usually starts because everyone around them is smoking. Then they get addicted without even realizing it. Like any addiction, it brings comfort to that person to continue smoking.

I've always wondered this.
my dad started smoking when he was 12. he's now 44. he quit like 5 years ago.
anyway, i have no idea why people do it. do they think it makes them look good? i've noticed a trend in the answers. they all say its addicting. that once you try it, its very hard to quit. but why do poeple try it in the first place?! i think its disgusting. you get a star.

It starts with peer pressure and then addiction. Then you quit smoking cigarettes and concentrate on the good stuff.

My mother has been a smoker for over 40 yrs and she stopped earlier this year.
I am so proud of her. She was getting the symptoms of lung disease.
She has gained weight, but I am happy to see that she stopped the smelliest habit of all.
