The Tecumseh 'Snow King' engine used by John Deere and others is an industry standard. It has an iron liner and is quite reliable. Mine has eight seasons on it and is usually running before the starter cord is pulled out all the way. It has an electric starter which I have never needed to use.

As with any other engine, maintenance is key. Change the oil annually and keep it clean and dry whenever possible.

Sure they are good engines. With proper maintenance they will run forever. There is a good availablility of parts also. I have an old 8 hp tecumseh on my tiller and it has been running for 19 years that I know of, it wasn't new when I bought it. I change the oil and clean the air filter.
