C has to be the correct answer because:

A. Maine wasn't an independent colony yet. Remained part of Mass. until 1820.

D. The natives lived west of the Appalachians Mountains, and the colonists wanted to stay east of them to stay close to the Atlantic Ocean.

B. The Great Lakes are west of the Appalachians. See D.
