How and why is it that offices, councils etc totally outlaw any illusion to Christmas (for fear of offending non Christians) yet high street shops and TV advertising positively gorge themselves on the Christmas theme with abandon?

I don't think it's the non Christians who are complaining actually - I think it's white middle class liberal council leaders who are up their own ar$es.

Nattering Na.... thank you. You understand what my question is trying to get at. Phew!

I'm not asking for a debate on whether 'Christmas' should be changed or not, I'm simply pointing out seemingly hypocritical stances on the issue.

Because the advertising companies know that if a company advertised Winter Festival themes there would be public outcry and people would be boycott that company it would be business suicide. Councils are run by stupid middle class liberals who think non Christians are offended by everything when in fact there not. Ive never met anyone from another religion that is offended Christmas, most appreciate that it is an important cultural point in the calender and understand how the Christian Church and its teaching shaped the nation even if they don't believe in Jesus.

Hi,
I have given this answer before with regard to language......

When in Rome, do as the Romans do!

I have no problem with someone celebrating Diwali or Ramadam, nor do I take offence.
(hmm... what would happen if the tables were turned?)

In the UK, Christmas is a national holiday and a religious festival, some of us don't celebrate the religious side of it and some (businesses) celebrate the commercial side of it.

Regardless, this is what we do,
I don't follow the religious side of it but it is a time when I get to spend time with my family & catch up with lost friends.

Why on earth do we have certain councils that decide to rename Christmas - Winterval?

If you don't want to celebrate Christmas, then don't, but don't complain when the rest of us do.

As for the rest of you........

Merry Christmas!

Have a good one

Danny

I don't know of an office that has banned christmas, I hear about this all the time and it never fails to make me frown because I work for a London Local Authority - which by definition is multi-cultural in both its community and staff. We are absolutely allowed to celebrate christmas and have decorations, food, xmas party etc, is this because my council is tory? I don't think so, it was liberal until the last election (I think)

Is this really true or is it media hype about political correctness?

Only a few councils do this, most are more sensible. No non-Christian I have ever met is offended by Christmas, whether of any religion or none. As far as I can tell, the people who seem most 'offended' are people who want to be seen to be politically correct. shops don't care about this, only about what is good for their business, and what do you know, apparently most people like Christmas enough to buy far more than at any other time of year.

Where I work most of us will celebrate any festival or celebration of any religion as long as:

a) we get 'time off' by management to do so and

b) someone brings in the snacks !

Besides the Christians stole the mid winter festival from the pagans and made out thats when Jesus was born.

A decision to call Christmas lights "Winter Lights" in south London
Labour's own Sure Start playgroups condemned for replacing their Christmas parties with politically-correct "winter celebrations".
Season's greetings instead of Merry Christmas cards.
Xmas instead of Christmas
it goes on

Because not everyone who works in offices, councils etc are Christian. And it would take forever to acknowledge every holiday

What if they only celebrated Father's Day? I mean, men started the country, why should women have a holiday for being Mothers? Then we'll have to celebrate Grandparent's Day.. Aunt's Day.. Uncle's Day? You get the picture?

And p.s. most people were once immigrants. Unless you can directly trace your roots to the most indigenous people of your land, you've got no claim. Have some tolerance.

i do no longer understand if it is going to be actual, even however that's nit undesirable theory in case you tackle to non-Christians. I even have many non-Christian acquaintances, so i take advantage of the word Winterval basically while tackle to them using fact i'd desire to share the exhilaration of my holiday with them too. that isn't any longer actual which you would be able to love and comprehend basically Christians and if Christianity is approximately love and respecting, it won't be selective. of direction, as quickly as I tackle to my Christian acquaintances, I sue the word Christmas.

Our Halloween disco was re-named an autumn disco and our Christmas Fair a winter fair, no reasons given. The children still dressed up as witches etc and father Christmas will still be at the fair. Silly.

Elementary Dr Watson. Christmas means money to the high street shops. But notice most try to shy away from the religious aspects of the holiday.
