School is hard for me because I have so many other things to worry about. I worry about digging myself into debt, not being able to pay bills, being late to class, flunking the class, being late to work, losing my job!!! It's crazy, I know, but those are honestly things I worry about. I try to do everything perfect, and I get really stressed when things aren't. I can't keep this up! It's taking a toll on me. Also, if I haven't already described anxiety, I have pretty bad anxiety while in my classes. If I arrive after the start time of my class, even if I'm right outside the door, I won't walk in, I'll just leave and wait for my next class or go to work because I'm THAT paranoid about walking in late and being judged by the instructor/classmates. I HATE that feeling more than anything, walking in late, having everyone stare at me, possibly not being able to find a seat, or having the instructor say something smart to me in front of everyone! Anyone else know what I'm talking about?

What can I do to change myself? I'm 22yrs old, by the way, and I know I probably sound pretty silly! But, i'm being honest. My anxiety is BAD, i suppose? HELP! Thanks.

I have the same exact problem. I find sometimes that the fears I have are false fears and perceptions. I bet that if you quickly walked into the classroom nothing would happen if something is said, just make a joke about it. To help out with the other problems look at the bigger picture. Getting an education is the most important aspect of life right now. Make a promise to yourself that you wont lest yourself fail. If you have to go to special turtoring sessions. What ever you have to do to not fail do it.

It sounds like you are stressed out. I am the same, I go to class 7 times a week, and work 5 days a week. I hate walking in late as well. However, you must remember you are paying the professor his salary, so if you are little late, it is none of their business! I try to be on time as well, but hey, **** happens! Just relax, enjoy this small break we have this week, get caught up, and go.
My problem is, I feel like I am always behind, and really I am, but with the workload and not much time, it is the best that I can do! Just remember, you only have to do it once, and once you are done, you are done!!!

All right, first take a deep breath! Honestly, everyone is anxious during college, but you are missing out on the wonderful experience it is by freaking out. Also, you are inadvertently giving yourself more stress by not going to class and worrying about what people think about you. Perfection will lead you to an early grave!! Life will be incredibly hard if you put this much pressure on yourself. What you are doing is worrying instead of doing. Many people spend hours making lists to organize themselves, but realize that they spent all the time needed for actual work on list-making. That is exactly like what you are doing. I recommend talking with a counselor about your anxiety because it needs to dealt with soon or things will just get more chaotic, not because they are, but you are making them so in your head. Have confidence and take one thing at a time. Not even Bill Gates or Warren Buffet, two unbelievably successful men, are perfect or get to class on time every single day!!! :)
Take care.

Dear Brandi,

You may be trying to accomplish, more than reasonably can be accomplished. My experience has been, when working full time, six contact hours, is a hefty academic load. I say contact hours, and not credit hours, because of the impact courses with labs can have. A four or five-credit course in physics or chemistry, with a lab, is as much work as two three-credit courses in English, history, or mathematics.

When you are supporting yourself, you must put your health first, your job second, and your education third. When I was twenty-two, I didn't even have a year's worth of credits. I didn't graduate, until I was twenty-eight. It really isn't about the goal; it is about the journey.

That doesn't mean, loose focus of your goal. It is important to have the goal and remain focused on the goal. However, it doesn't mean you should suffer reaching it.

Please, take care of yourself,

Larry

I do know exactly what you're talking about as I do it myself, whenever I'm late I'm too scared to face those glares, and I've always been a perfectionist. What you have to do is take risks, it's so hard but just think that you're better than whatever's restricting you from doing it

and remember, you only live once! Things never turn out as bad as you think.

My grandfather once told me how I should behave at college: go to bed early, prepare well and always arrive early. Now, looking back, I know he was a smart man. This way I was far more relaxed amd passed my tests easily.

You should talk to a doctor before it gets any worse. It sounds like you have social anxiety disorder.
