but you might have to weed out which ones are servers and which ones are fan sites trying to provide cheats and rushes

Id say that 99% are usually free. But sometimes some kid will feel that his is extra extra special and try to charge.

Illegal? technically no, its not "against the law". BUT using a companies client software to play on an unofficial server is almost always a violation of the Terms of Service (ToS) that you agreed to when you loaded the software. You can get banned, lose all your official characters, even be banned from ALL of that companies present and future games on their servers.

You can try and keep an eye out for public domain open source client programs to go with the public domain open source server emulators. That still might have a question of legality but it becomes a question for the people who wrote it, not those that played it as far as I know.

like on runescape there is its called moperscape... but it is illegal on runescape...
