I like books that start with a bang. action from the get-go. If the first 1/3 of the book is lead-up then I'm board already!

I like stuff about people doing horrible things. the people are the monsters. psychological horrors. serial killers. evil kids.. that kind of stuff. I love smart, devious characters! lots of torture, fear and murder!

"The Oath" by Frank Peretti. It's a scary book, very, very hard to put down especially if you have enjoyed books such as 'Angels and Demons'.

Something new could be Therese Raquin by Emile Zola. It's a gritty tale of a bored wife married to a frail man. One day, she meets the passionate, sexy Laurent, who is actually a lazy sleaze who just wants pleasure in his life. together, they brutally murder Camille, the husband. yet they are haunted by this ghost at all times. Soon they grow mad and their violent lust leads to a violent end. Honestly, the details of seedy late 19th century Paris are horrifying as they are potent. Every word hangs on you as you go deeper and deeper into their troubled psyches. Zola was actually the literary predecesor of Fydor Dostovesky, so you are bound to be *drowned* in psychological detail. Drowning is, also, an important bit of the book.
This is different then the thrillers of today, but different is good!

Dean Koontz is a prolific author who writes psychological horror. If you're looking for specific titles, False Memory and Night Chills were pretty good.
