After being knocked out of World Cup '06, Beckham and coach Erikson seemed to be blamed most for the loss. The management seemed to want to get rid of that "Swedish coach" and the "old poster boy".

In my opinion, it was a big mistake. Erikson was a fine coach and always got England far into the tournaments. And Beckham is the spiritual leader and "face" of England, even though he may be a little old and injured.

What do you guys think? Was new coach Mclaren and new captain Gerrard to blame for their not making to Euro 2008? In general, the team played very well (lots of 3-0 victories) but was just unable to make it. Bad luck? Or bad management?

Well, Mclaren was trying so hard to get rid of the image brought by the 'superstars' of the England team when he took over from Sven Goran Eriksson, and the very first thing that he does is to take Becks off the team, eventhough that he knew that Beckham set-pieces are valuable to the team.

All I can say that eventhough Beckham is not the captain of teh Engalnd team anyore, one should not deny the fact that his contribution to the team when he on the field is important in England's games. Now that England had failed to qualify for the Euro 2008, we could only see that Becks will be out of the sight, well, at least for sometime now.

The problem with beckham is he is good at what he does and that's dead balls and crossing but nothing else we saw in the game the other day you play a ball a little in front of him and he has no chance. He is a great impact player and should stay on for that.
As for Sven he was never a bad coach he lacked passion which could be due to him not being english (i would find it hard to be passionate managing a team that was not my home nation) he also had too much baggage with his personal life and that interfered with england.

As a Mets fan I think that David Wright would make a great captain. He is a leader on the field and in the clubhouse. He is an exceptional hitter and many of the Mets players look up to him. The other players would listen to him. I think that Jason Varitek is a great captain for the Red Sox. Derek Jeter is also a great captain for the Yankees. I agree that catchers make the best captains. As long as they are a veteran though. If there is a rookie catcher then no they should not be a captain. The "C" should always be on a veterans jersey. Whether it is a catcher or not. In my mind catchers are the smartest players on the team. They usually go on to become great major league managers. (ex. Joe Torre, Joe Girardi)

none whatsoever, have you seen beckham beating a player while having the ball? 99 caps, how many tournaments he played in? they didnt win any of them. gerrard was captain 4 how many games?? what about john terry, was he a captain, englands problems started when the fa picked their second choice as manager, why? only in england you dont pick your best man to do a job. look at carragher, available to play for england , who did mac pick, ledley king, macclaren cant manage to tie his shoe laces thats why he wears slip on so manage england, what a joke.

You cant depend on a old captain that cant play anymore and the coach should of known that. There is a lot more younger, talented, healthier and faster people out there in England. They will be good next time around. Go Germany

Beckham has been hopeless for a long time. He's a one trick pony with a good cross and sometimes a good dead ball but otherwise he vanishes.
Against Croatia he played well for 5 minutes. The rest of the time he was useless
