It is the thought. Babies need stuff too.

I am a 68 year old with 19 grandchildren and have experienced many first birthdays and Christmas'es. Most of my grandchildren seem to have plenty of "stuff". To show you care but not throw away money I have created a "time capsule" to be opened when the baby is 18 or 21 or whenever you decide. You can include a newpaper or newspaper articles, anything that shows what is popular this year music, books, toys. Also fast food toys are good. I wrote a letter to include with the last one I did because I am sure I won't be around when he opens it. I also included a copy of my favorite book "To Kill a Mockingbird " and why I thought is was such a great book. It is important to the family that the baby be included even if he is not yet old enough to understand.

I think it's a kind of ritual to welcome the newest child to the family. The newborn is not aware of it of course, but it is a way that the older members of the family acknowledge and condition themselves to remember the child the same as the rest of the family.
Another reason to give cash is, young babies grow fast. They use up a lot of clothes and diapers and other baby gear. The parents are in a better position than anybody else to know what the baby needs or would benefit from.

People feel obligated to buy even thought new babies obviously don't understand what's happening around them. Still, it is a nice offering and an exciting time for new parents and Christmas is a time for celebration. Hope you have a good one!

Because a new born is still part of the family and everyone thinks that Christmas is for the whole family. I would get something for my new born baby even though they wouldn't remember it for very long you would always be able to look back on that memory and tell them about it when they get older. I think it is just because it is the new born's first Christmas and the parents want to make it special.

Why not? Babies can cost a lot of money when you have to buy cribs, blankets, clothes, diapers, bottles, formula etc etc and the parents are usually very grateful for any assistance given to them. Babies grow out of their clothes so quickly that they need to have larger sizes quite regulary.

Even though the baby isn't aware of receiving gifts, they can still use things like clothes, toys, and blankets. It's also a way of showing love to the parents.

When they are a new born, its important to keep in mind that the gift should fit thier life. For a new born, you can buy them outifts or supplies (formula, etc.) that will help the child out. It also makes you feel good to give to others. The parents will be thankful as well.

well, you can always get a gift that the baby can enjoy later. babies are also not brain-dead until they are three. there are sources of stimulation that can be good for their development. and when i have given a gift for a new born baby, it wasn't just for the enjoyment of the baby, but the family, as well. and as for the why not wait until they are three to spend? well, if people have the resources to give gifts, why not? because it's a waste? it is not a waste to give babies presents until they are three.

Being a new mother I agree with the first answerer. Babies need LOADS of stuff too. Just because the baby can't appreciate it, the parents definitely will.

That's what I did, but then I'm a miser.
My 3 year old will get a decent number of presents this year for the first time and she'll understand the point of it all and not just play with the box or the wrapping paper - lol.
