I think Professor Stephen Hawking is the best example of someone who inspired me. Although handicapped with motor neurone disease, he managed to win a Nobel prize and contribute to the advancement of science. Few things impress me as much as someone with a severe handicap going on to do great things.

There are lots of examples of ones success. It does not have to deal with money, power or fame, which is why the person I was most inspired by was my aunt (now deceased) Juanita Brice Johnson. Living in Alabama during the civil rights movement provided more than a life of experiences for me. While I had the love of my family and friends, my aunt was most instrumental in forcing me to think beyond the box that whites attempted to scale for blacks. She was a teacher and also was guilty of speaking out, forcing issues of race and inclusion before it was popular. She encouraged me to join Girl Scouts, leave a comfortable 'black school' to intergrate a predominately white school. She pushed me into Spelling Bee Competition, and other competitions that included whites. She forced me to put myself out there in spite of the retribution I might have received. I walked with Dr. King as a child, I was involved in the Chidren's march, I read voraciously, she exposed me to all kinds of music and allowed me to study with Art Tatum, Lee Morgan and other great jazz musicians. I spoke eloquently throughout our city and whites marveled at this black girl. I performed songs and piano compositions to great and small. I eventually had my own television show, singing group, traveled around the world. I believe that it was the inspiration of my aunt, her encouragement that I could do anything I wanted which made me who I am today. I believed in her and I believe it was her teaching, coaching, that moved me toward my own level of success. Today, I am a teacher and she was a teacher. I think her inspiration is what moved me the most.
