Yes a DVD burner is able to read a DVD-ROM, if i didn't it would be able to burn them...lol A CD Burner is also able to read CD-ROMS!!!! But a CD Burner cant read a DVD ROM unless it is a dual burner.
It might not list DVD ROMS under the supported format because they might just think everyone knows it will read it.
If you are in that much dought don't buy it...but im 99.9% sure it will read it, if not its probably a bad DVD burner also.
Also you could just ask the guy...thats what I would do...

A PC/Computer DVD bunrer can read ROM, yes, but perhaps a DVD burner for burning TV recordings to disk may not?

I can't tell you that, if you look right on the drive, it tells you either dvd burner or cd-r/rw and other things like taht, or, just pop in a dvd and see if it plays.

of course it can! Can't a cd-burner read a cd? That would be like saying a tape cassette recorder can't read cassettes!

It should be listed as DVD R/RW. Meaning it can read,(R), and re-write,(RW). http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/Category/category_tlc.asp?CatId=4&name=CD-DVD-Burners
