It's just a stereotype that's all. All my gay friends aren't what I would consider "sissys" ,but there feminine and don't play sports and things like that... I haven't ever really met any butch gay guys before... I'm sure theres lots though.

i know a few gay men. i think it's partly based on a stereotype because 2 of the men i know acts like any other man i know, not sissy's, not camp or anything like that. however the other gay guy i know is a proper sterotypical gay. a camp sissy with the gay voice to top it all off

My guess, and it's only a guess, is that because some of us, like myself, are bottoms, we are somehow therefore womenlike because we have intercourse with men. In the rabidly heterosexual's mind, only women have intercourse with men, even if it is anal. Then the element of parody is added to complete the fiction to make it more marketable and appealing to a wider audience, so they'll have something to laugh at. That idiotic show "Will and Grace" is a prime example. I hate that dizzy queen, Jack, and never watch it. In the real world most gay men would scorn a guy who behaved that way. So why, even amongst ourselves, is it acceptable if it's on television?

Some are more butch and some are more feminine. Each person is an individual and different. Don't put much stock in the stereotypes.

First of all, it is not "everyone" who think gay men are sissys.
This word is used to pressure young men into suppressing any gay feelings that surface as they mature. By bullying male children with this word while they are very young, misguided parents create major conflicts that emerge if their son is gay at the point where he becomes aware of sexuality. This is child abuse pure and simple, and should be abolished as it just pushes young men into the closet as they become teens.

It's a stereotype.
Like blondes being ditzy & skanky or brunettes being boring or to serious.
I don't know how many of you have seen the HBO special "L word" or the special channel for Homosexual T.V. (not Bravo, something else) but the shows project the illusion that these Homosexual males are druggies and sex addicts among other things.
When it comes down to it, people believe just about anything.

Ignorance.... The same reason everyone thinks Sissies are gay men.

People obviously tend to remember things that stand out. Your average gay guy isn't particularly different, so they remember the camp gay guys, and project that onto all gay people.

A lot of people don't know gay people personally (or don't know that they do) so they just know gay people from the flamboyant parading type that are hard to miss! :P

Bad stereotype. I am a masculine gay and most people wouldn't guess that I am gay, except for my family. They knew because of my lack of interest in girls. Other than that, I don't seem gay at all.

Sure, I know a fashion designer who's into all that. There's bound to be plenty more out there. In my experience, it's not excessively common. My ex kinda went off in that direction before we broke up, but it seems that was only a prelude to his coming out as transgender.
