Sid the Kid is a great hockey player with great skills. I would say he'll likely end up being more in the vein of a Mario Lemieux than a Gretzky. The reason I say this is mostly because of his size and the fact that Mario is the principal owner and chairman of the board for the Penguins. I also think he's maturing faster than did Gretzky, who was known as a whiner early in his career. I hope he'll carry as much class as super Mario did!

Why are people so concerned with this comparison? Just enjoy the the kids play and be thankful that you got to see players the likes of Gretzky and Crosby because they only come along once.

Crosby will never be the next Gretzky or the next Lemieux
- simply put, he's nowhere near as skilled as they are...and he admits this.
people talk about Crosby approaching Gretzky's records. Gretzky record 300 points in his first two NHL seasons, Crosby....222 points
Gretzky recorded his 300th point, and a younger age than Crosby recorded his 250th.
I could go on.
Needless to say, Crosby played his first NHL game a mere 8 months younger than Gretzky. Gretzky scored more, faster.

I'm a Sidney Crosby and Pittsburgh Penguins fan...
And I don't care what he is or will be, or what anyone thinks of him. (Though I certainly don't mind hearing out all opinions.) I just want him to lead the Pittsburgh Penguins to the Stanley Cup one day.
While I believe it's good to look at both a player's strengths AND weaknesses, I feel many people tend to focus on his weaknesses. I also feel people tend to take his talents and accomplishments (that he's shown or earned thus far) for granted out of resentment for his hype or some other paling reason.
Sometimes, even when people admit he's talented or successful thus far (to a degree, of course, because he only has 2 full NHL seasons under his belt) they admit it as an afterthought... Like, "[insert negative comment(s) here] but he's a good player" or "he's a good player and all, but [insert negative comment(s) here]". I don't expect anyone and everyone to worship or laud him, but I question their hockey knowledge if they can't see that he's a little more talented than the average player.
The "Ovechkin vs Crosby" argument is ridiculous to me as well. I believe both players should be celebrated for their individual talents. Whether you believe either Gretzky or Lemieux were better than the other, that doesn't mean they weren't BOTH great players. There might be one player you'd rather see play for a team, but again, that doesn't take away from either of their skills. Crosby is Crosby, Ovechkin is Ovechkin.

He's very talented but needs to work on his temper before becoming the next Gretzky.
He's more of a cry-baby than a Gretzky right now.

He's an amazing player, but the comparisons to Gretzky are ludicrous.

I think he is very talented as are many other young players. I think it is a little unfair he gets SO much attention when there are better younger players out there.

Well, he's got what it takes, but he has to get there before I'll call him, or anyone else, the greatest.
