The headright system was used in Jamestown, starting in 1683, as an attempt to solve labor shortages due to the advent of the tobacco economy, which required large plots of land with many workers. Virginian colonists were each given two headrights of 50 yards (200,000 m²) each, immigrant colonists who paid for their passage were given one headright, and individuals would receive one headright each time they paid for the passage of another individual. This last mechanism increased the division between the wealthy land-owners and the working poor. Many people came to the colonies in an attempt to gain land, but were denied headrights by "Kings."[clarify] Kings wanted the land to produce more goods for their trading companies.[citation needed]

Headright, a system in which colonists were given a grant of land, usually 50 acres to a settler, given by certain colonies and companies in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Jamestown Settlement
In 1607, 13 years before the Pilgrims landed in Massachusetts, a group of 104 English men and boys began a settlement on the banks of Virginia's James River. They were sponsored by the Virginia Company of London, whose stockholders hoped to make a profit from the resources of the New World. The community suffered terrible hardships in its early years, but managed to endure, earning the distinction of being America's first permanent English colony.

Jamestown's beginnings were based upon seeking wealth in the form of precious minerals (gold & silver) there was little or no interest in the colonists to establish farming communities. There is also the evidence that no women or children arrived in the very beginning.

The first three were the reasons how Jamestown got started but the headright system was not established until 1683 due to the problems of harvesting tobacco because of a lack of a workforce.
