In really important artists it is hard to know their sexual orientation. It is not important or visible in their work.
Their themes are much more broader than unimportant details about their own private lives.
I make an exception for a period between the 1960's and the 1970's when this was a main issue in contemporary art.

Then there's thousands of artists that work around this gender and sexual orientation issues. But usually they are not very important artists. They use this as self affirmation or as a way to express problems in their own private lives.

By the way, i don't know if Dali was gay, but the biggest passion of his life was Gala, his wife.

Salvadore Dali was notoriously gay, as was Andy Warhol.
