Mars was known since antiquity. Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn were all visible with the naked eye by the ancient astonomers. The name is Roman but it has a Greek counterpart, Ares.

Mars is a naked eye object and has hence been known since the very first human ancestors looked up at it. It would have been discovered as a planet (in the original definition of a wandering star) the first time anyone made a sequence of observations and noted its movements and brightness changes, thousands of years ago, and seen as a sphere as soon as the first telescope was aimed at it a few centuries ago.
