I've just purchased a 32' Haulmark Elite II enclosed race trailer. It has an 8000# winch that runs off of a battery. I'd like to add a solar battery charger and mount it to the top of the trailer so that the winch is always ready to go. Any suggestions as to what i should buy, and/or avoid buying? Thanks.

You really do need to contact a solar dealer either local or on the Internet.

How many amp hours does the battery hold? Is it 12 volt or ???

You should use a min of 5% rate of charge on a battery. No more then 10% rate of charge. So if you have a 100 amp hour battery you would want to put 5 amps in to it at minimum and 10 amps at max.

10 amps would be better on a 100 AH 12 volt battery. So 12 volts times 10 amps is 120 watts in solar power. Now with a charge controller invloved you will loose about 20% of the charge between the recharge losses and heat and the controller.
This means you will end up with 100 watts in input power from the solar panel from the 120 watt panel. 100 watts divided by 12 volts is 8.33 amps input. Meaning you get about an 8.3% rate of charge which would be in the middle and just right.

I went in a circle explaining that so I hope I did not confuse you.

Go on ebay and look for a panel in the 25 to 50 watt range. When you find one, check the specs and see if it has an open circuit voltage (Voc) around 18 volts, which means it is optimized for 12 volt batteries. Then look for the max forward current (Imax), it will be around 1 to 3 amps. Then purchase a charge controller on ebay as well, with at least a 5 amp rating, 10 is better, and set for either 12 volts, or 12/24 auto select. Most of them will have this feature. A panel this size might cost you $50 USD, and the controller another $25. They are not hard to hook up, two terminals on the controller go to the panel, two to the battery. Another two are for the load, if they are installed, but you don't need them.

Then just leave it connected up that way, and if you want, you can put a small light in the trailer, preferrably an LED, with a switch to use at night. The winch will use a fair amount of power, maybe 20 or 30 amps, but only for a few seconds or minutes, less than 1/100th of an hour, so we're talking maybe 1 or 2 amp hours per use, which a 30 watt panel can replace in an hour or two of sun. You don't need anything else, you don't need an expert. It is a low voltage system, pretty hard to get hurt with. A short will make an exciting shower of sparks, but it can't electrocute anyone at 12 volts. Just make sure you have the polarity correct on everything, positive from the panel to positive on the controller, and positive from the battery to positive to the controller, same for all the negatives. I would suggest that you find a solar energy dealer near you and ask for help. You didn't say if there is any lights in the trailer. A solar panel of 75 to 100 watt rating plus regulator will work well for you.
