We have just bought a ceramic hob/fan oven as our house has been rewired. My partner wants to connect it himself (im scared!!)... he says he can just cut the wires off the old cooker -which is currently connected - and wire them into the new one (there is a proper cooker plug there)... but is this safe? i would have thought the new cookers own cable needed to be connected to the wall! any advice is much appreciated as i dont want him to blow the house up!

When in doubt, you should call an electrician. You would not want you your partner electocuted nor your house to burn down.

It cannot hurt to look closely, though. Both my (gas) oven and the microwave over the stove hood are plugged into outlets, not wired into the circuits. I am hoping you will find the same.

your partner is correct he can connect it to the existing cooker socket which is just a 240v supply, the same as any socket and will be connected to the same ring.

It is not dangerous and will not cause a fire. ( if you turn off the electric first) .

Make him take out a BIG insurance policy with you as beneficiary! That should get the point across. I think it may be illegal in the uk to do what he plans. Seriously get an electrician, or at least consult one.

Well, technically your friend is correct. But to do so would void your insurance and possibly cause a fire, and maybe electrocute you or your pardner.
