Where exactly did Medieval folklore come from? And why did it start?

In days of yore, most people were illiterate, and the way a story/legend/myth/religious belief got handed down was through the bards, these were the poets, story tellers, singers of ballads, these people were walking, living libraries of their time and of times before them..
Then came the days of books, and more people who were literate, then began the "culling of the bards" for their stories..

You'll have to be WAY more specific then that.
As far as what we have written down? Most of it was sung by bards in order to tell stories. Eventually they were written down. And which folklore? Like Arthur? The lore of the gods? Literature? They all have different roots in different countries.

nobody can exactly pinpoint where it came from. Most people studying the subject think it started from weird coincidences happening, and the people had to put the blame on SOMETHING, and you know how people have some WILD imaginations...

it explains why things happened that could not be explained or to teach lesions to the children thy were no different than Urban legends today
