I have Windows XP but I am thinking about getting Vista. How much memory do I have to have? How much RAM do I have to have? For Vista to run good.

I would say stick to XP for a while because Vista still has some kinks in it and some other problems so i would recommend waiting until next year when they come out with Service Pack 1. Ive used Vista and its not much better than XP and i personally like XP better. So i would recommend waiting. Oh, and i heard yesturday that pretty soon they are coming out with XP Service Pack 3.

Like Gangster, I suggest that you go to http://www.microsoft.com and run the upgrade adviser. It can tell you if there are any hardware problems that you might encounter. But Vista is a resource hog. Here are the requirements.

Vista Home Basic:
CPU at least a one gig clock.
RAM 1 gig
Vid card 128 meg.

Bista Home Premium:
CPU at least a one gig clock. (Faster is better)
RAM l gig will run it but 2 gigs is way better.
Vid card 128 meg minimum (the more ram on the card the better)

Now I hear allot of negativity about Vista. Well I have been running it since it came out, and have had no problems at all. Yes, I am a computer tech, but that should not make all that much difference. Vista is at least twice the operating system that XP is. It is fast and secure. I have had "NO" blue screens or freezes. It does need a little cleaning up but then, so does XP. There are a few security features that are a bit annoying, but they can be turned off.

I really wish that folks would not run down Vista just because then either don't understand it or are incapable of actually setting up and operating a "operating system".

Oh yeah, I did have two older programs that would not function under Vista, but they were very old, (win 98 vintage). Other then that all of my office suites and high end graphics editors work just fine.

Vista is feature rich. It will take you some time to find all of the bells and whistles. But all in all it is a very good OS and I'm sure it will get better as time go by. There is a service pack due the first part of next year. It is time for a new OS any way. XP has over 200 security patches, and that's not to mention all of the system upgrades. Because of this, XP has become a very bloated OS and needs to be replaced.

Hi, yeah before u get Vista visit http://www.microsoft.com and run Vista upgrade advisor and check to see if all ur hardware and software r compatible or not. For Windows Vista u need 2gb of ram for it to work good. Windows Vista also requires a DirectX 9.0c vga card as well of at least 128mb. Vista is a lot more stable and secure and is worth the upgrade. I hope I helped.
Good Luck!

XP

I hear that Vista has lots and LOTS of slowdown. That's a no no for me. That's why when I get a new laptop then I'd want XP but most of them carry the "crappy" Vista.

Please don't. Everyone I have met or know do not like Vista and its problems. All have asked how to get XP back. When they DO get XP back they still have Vista leftovers installed and cannot change them.

I'm sure you will get more answers on this.
