It will slow it down big time. Chances are a windows 98 unit has a lame processor like a pent 2 or 3. XP takes up a lot of memory and your pc will not work like you want it to. Your best bet is to get a pc but which one? check it out:
do not buy any of these:
AMD Athlon 64 (Socket 754)
AMD Athlon XP
AMD Duron
Intel Celeron (Without the D Model Numbers)
Intel Pentium 4 (non-Socket T)
Intel Pentium III
Good Budget processors:
AMD Athlon 64
AMD Sempron 64
Intel Celeron D 300 Series
Intel Pentium 4 (Socket T)
Intel Pentium D 805 Through 820
Mid range processors:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ to 4600+ (Socket AM2)
Intel Pentium D 900 Series
Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 to E6700
The top of the line processors:
AMD Athlon 64 FX-60 and higher
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ and higher
Intel Core 2 Extreme X6800, QX6700 and higher

Hi, yeah in order to go from Windows 98 to XP SP2 just make sure u have 512 mb ram and I think if u have a pentium 3 then its good enough and will work fine. You can check ur computer hardware by right clicking on my computer then go to properties and if ur processor is faster then 600mhz then it will work fine. I hope I helped, and if u need any more help then just email me.
Good Luck and take care!

If your system has enough resources, then you sure can. XP requires at least: 400 meg cpu, 512 megs ram, and at least 2 to 3 gigs of open hard drive to facilitate the loading process. If you have all of this, then XP should work just fine.

It all depends on the speed of the CPU and the amount of RAM installed............if you were to let us know those two things then we could advise you. Without at least those two facts no one would know if you can run XP.

98 was (in my humble opinion) one of the best OPs going. XP is Huge.
I gotta be honest and say I'm not sure but doubt it's compatible
Good luck.
