I have a ipod shuffle and are having problems adding songs.

are you using ITunes software?
Just download it
and then click file, add folder to library
and choose the folder where your songs are in
the songs should pop up in ITunes
then, connect your shuffle to the computer
and it should also show up in ITunes
choose to sync it and the songs should be on your shuffle :D
