I find this guy at work quite amazing, There is 5 of us at work, this guy has picked the most popular person in our work place and is buying everything he buys just to fit in, Its like when I was at school and Air Jordans where all the rage, This guy has bought an xbox, ipod, taken up various different hobbies and even bought a BMW all because the most popular guy in our work place has just bought one.

Whats wrong with being an individual?

Do you have a person like this at your work? A person who just really tries to hard

Ha ha ha Every workplace has one. I know mine does. I would call them a follower, a drone. Has no mind of their own and thinks this is the way to get noticed. Oddly enough at my work place we have more than one of them!

I would call him a lost soul. He doesn't know who he is, so he tries to be like the most popular guy, thinking he'll be just as popular. There's nothing wrong with being an individual, this is what we're all supposed to be in the first place, but most people don't wanna be different because being different has caused problems (just think back to all the people you know or don't know, who were called "different". Were they amazing people or were they mostly bullied?) No one wants to embraces their differences because they fear rejection, among other things.

Maybe you should get that popular guy he's copying, to say in front of him that he's gonna give away all his stuff to charity and start fresh. See what this copycat does after that.

He is obviously terribly insecure and believes that if he has the same material posessions as the popular people then he will fit in, and be popular and successful himself.

Its really rather sad because he's never felt comfortable being himself. Maybe he doesn't know how to be individual.

I am very lucky - I work with some very head strong people with no trouble expressing who they are.

Nothing is wrong with being an individual and most of us outgrow the "do what the popular guy does" thing by highschool. Apparently he hasn't. It sounds as if he's really seeking approval and attention. Perhaps something went wrong during his childhood. I just don't know. I haven't expereienced this phenomenon in the workplace, but I have heard of it, but usually it's the boss who they try to please. If this guy irriates you, ignore him. If you are worried about him, try to get to know him a little and compliment the things about him that are individual.

Yeah I know someone like this but it is a girl, she hangs out with this really amazing girl who is just perfect in everyway, I mean she is hot and totally approachable, but this other girl just kinda hangs around her and laughs at things she says, her laugh its self is like this other girls, she buys the same clothes bags, similar hair colour, shoes, she even drinks the same drinks both in the office and out but I think worst of all she actually took up a 10 a day smoking habit just because this total sex bomb does it, all this just to get closer to her and look like her friend................. Screw it where can I buy cigarettes from these days and I can deal with Vodka lime and soda, but the high heels, I don't think they make them in my size!!

Yes there are many people at my work like that. I work in a large office with about 200 people in it. I liken it to school too.
The cool folk just hang out with the cool folk, the teachers pets now suck up the bosses bottom, the nerds are all in IT, all the mosher/goth like people hang out together....
Its weird, sitting and watching all of these people doing exactly what they did at school....

People never seem to grow up. I'd call a guy lik this a subservile flatterer for sure. A BMW?! That's insanity.

The guy must have a lot of self esteem issues. He lacks confidence in his own decisions and style.
