If you don't believe in something yourself, you'll be doomed to always believe in what everyone else does. Have conviction or be a puppet.

If you stand for something - like being a humanist, or a Christian or a Muslim (for example) you will have a set of values which will help you make decisions in your life according to those values.

If you have no convictions then you may lack a set of values on whch to base decisions, so you will bend this way and that depending on what you hear or read about.

It means that if you don't truly believe in certain things without influence of what other people think, then you would very gullible of what people tell you, or about things in this society.

You should know what you believe in , it should focus around your morals and principles in how you live your life.
if you are not principled you believe anything
because you don't know any better...and don't have the wisdom to make the right choices....
