Do you know where Myanmar is - WITHOUT NOW GO LOOKING UP THE INTERNET OR AN ATLAS??
There has been a lot of terrible violence in there recently. Even monks were shot at or murdered.
I am especially interested how many Americans would know, considering the reputation on Y!A as NOT knowing anything outside their own country. (No offense intended)

saving_cunegonde, you are not obliged to answer and I don't care. But the question remains - do YOU know where it is? As for me "generalising" about the intelligence of Americans - I don't think you have been around Y!A long enough to see questions such as "What is the capital of Australia?" or "Is New Zealand part of Asia?". Many Americans can't even find North Korea on the map, my dear.
"You would have to be a moron not to know what's going in Myanmar"? - well, do you?
I have NEVER said that ALL Americans do not know. THAT - would be a generalisation. Please get your definition right.
If you take offense then you REALLY have not been in Yahoo!Answers long enough.
If you read my question, I am asking how many people know or not know. The question is NOT about Americans are ignorant.

The question remains: without looking up - do YOU know where it is?

Ali:
Well said. Point taken. I still maintain that this question is for EVERYONE on Y!A and NOT just for Americans to answer. I just want to see who knows and who don't.

Ahhh - she is back! LOL - "have to be a moron not to know"? Haha - I think you have just called a lot of Americans "morons". By the way - for the benefit of your "intelligence" - it is P.P.S - my dear, and NOT P.S.S.
P.S stands for Post Script and thus the next one will be P.P.S for Post Post Script
Cheers.

Yes I do. It's the country formerly known as Burma, and the violence there is atrocious.
I forget the name of the woman who was the premier or president there, but she did a great deal of good there before she was deposed by a military regime.
Sorry. I did fail to make note that they are neighbors to (I believe) Thailand and Laos.
The woman's name SEEMS to be something like Ang San to the best of my recollection, but I may be thinking wrongly.

There are people through out the world who take no interest in what occurs outside of the borders of their own country. I believe this to be more of a universal issue in many ways. Perhaps if people and even the media were more concerned about the earth as whole the world would be a better place. I, for one, am tired of the media focusing on Britney Spears etc. because they believe that the masses want to know about what evil she has committed this week. Britney Spears is a waste of the media's time quite frankly. I feel that you have unjustly made a gross generalization about the United States because that comment can be applied to many nations.

I do in fact know where Myanmar (formerly known as Burma and part of the British empire) is and I studied about the colonial period for my thesis. I have even worked with a vessel crews from Myanmar and have learned a lot about their culture from the experience.

I know where Myanmar or Burma is. It is a country which was once part of India and also where U Win was premier and also where Ang San Su Kyi was elected premier but was deposed by military and still under detention.
For all this I didn't have to leave my desk.
And I must add that all my sympathies for the people of Myanmar and su kyi.

I already knew its physical location is in between India and China (used to be Burma). There has always been strife there. The Chinese regime doesn't like the Dalai Lama. The people are very poor too. I have read a lot about the region, its culture and people in the National Geographic, which I have had a subscription to for the past about 20 years and I read the news EVERY day as well.

It is the country formerly known as Burma. Amazingly enough it has one of the world's largest standing armies, unless the soldiers get tired of standing. Burma has a repressive government that needs a large army to maintain control. I knew this without looking at an atlas, but then I teach history and geography.

I absolutely loathe the fact that you generalize and insult the intelligence of Americans by that tasteless last sentence. For you're information, many Americans are very concerned with what goes on outside their borders, and its just a vestige of you're ignorance and narrow-mindedness that you say that.

For these reasons, I for one, will not condescend to answer you're question.

(P.S. You would have to be a moron not to know what is going on in Myanmar.)

(P.S.S. I do take offence, disclaimers don't make what you say all better dear.)

There should be 3571 novices. In approximately 3 weeks, the kiddies would be back at college and we are in a position to be frequent returned. a minimum of 5 of them would be around to thumbs down us. Sandy :O)
