It's a wonderful job if you like teaching. I do, because I want to transmit my love of literature to my students, and to give them what I was lucky enough to be given. It has to do with generosity.

If you are an academic, you are also supposed to do research. Personally I love both teaching and research, because I think they go together. Research nourishes your teaching, and teaching enriches your research: you have to learn how to explain difficult things in simple terms.

You can build your own little world around whatever your subject matter is. For instance, if you have a penchant for English literature, you'll be able to eat, drink, and sleep English literature while making a pretty good living at the same time. If you've got the brains, I think it would be a great way to go. Plus, you'll get a lot of time off to pursue your passion even deeper. How can you go wrong?

IMO a balance of education and experience is essential for any person to function well.

Pure academics is fine for the theory of most things but when you have no experience you have no grounds to evaluate other peoples theories.

I once saw a computer model that showed unequivocally that a bumble bee, a humming bird, and an Air Force C-124 cargo plane were all incapable of flight. Well my experience tells me different. Without that experience I would have had to accept the theory and if I were in a teaching position I would have passed that information on.

Academia is fine but without the experience it is an "Ivory Tower" where a very large group of educated idiots live.

Pros: You have control over much of what you do, the hours are great and the life is good. You work with smart people and get to interact with ctudents seeking knowledge.

Cons: There is an enormous amount of pressure to publish. Teaching doesn't count as much as it should, and research counts more than it shouls.

Only get a PhD if you REALLY want to do research.
